The Dubrovnik Series Chess Set - 3.75" King

    Product Code: MENWDVK375

The House of Staunton is proud to offer the Dubrovnik Series Chess set. A full tournament-sized Chess set, it features a 3.75" King with a 1.75" diameter base. The Chess pieces are hand carved by our master artisans and crafted out of the highest grade woods. The Chess pieces are heavily weighted with luxurious billiard cloth base pads and a beautiful finish.

The design of this set is an exact reproduction of the 1970s-era Dubrovnik Chess set, used in the 19th Chess Olympiad in Siegen, West Germany and made popular by the legendary Bobby Fischer, who was often photographed playing with his own set. This Chess set lacks many of the ornate features found in many Chess sets and featured sturdier bases and reinforced collars on all of the pieces, creating a set that will withstand years of use and abuse. The Bishops feature alternate-colored finials, and the King's finials can be easily swapped to match the style of our Zagreb Chess set.

As with all of our Chess sets, the Dubrovnik Series exemplifies a perfect combination of distinct beauty and functionality. It has been designed to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining an elegance which has become the hallmark of a House of Staunton chess set. The design, quality and craftsmanship of this set is UNMATCHED by any set of Chessmen in its price range. Nothing even comes close!

The Chessmen are new and each set consists of 34 Chessmen, including four Queens, a standard that was introduced by The House of Staunton over 10 years ago.

    Extended Info

The original Dubrovnik chessmen were commissioned by FIDE for the 9th Chess Olympiad, held in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia (now known as Croatia) between August 20th and September 11th, 1950. The pieces that were designed lacked many of the details found in other Chess sets from the period, such as a cross finial on the King and a miter in the Bishops, instead they were designed from the ground up to withstand tournament play, with wider and sturdier bases than other sets.

The Dubrovnik chessmen were redesigned for the 19th Chess Olympiad, held from September 5th to 27th in Siegen, West Germany. This tournament is well-known because of the match between Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer, setting the stage for Fischer's World Championship match againt Spassky in 1972. The 1970 version refined the Knight design and streamlined the rest of the Chessmen, producing a smoother design.

Fischer has been photographed and videotaped extensively playing with his 1970's-era Dubrovnik set, most notably in the HBO documentary Bobby Fischer vs. The World.

It is with great pride that we present the Dubrovnik chessmen for a new generation to play!
