The Fischer Series Chess set features a 4.4"
King with a 2.0" diameter base and is heavily
weighted. The Chess pieces are hand carved by our master artisans and
crafted out of the highest grade Boxwood and Genuine Ebony. True to the originals, these Chess
pieces are heavily weighted, have luxurious billiard cloth base pads on
each of the Chessmen and feature the traditional Kingside stamping of the
Knights and Rooks. The original set from the 1972 World
Championship match was created by the legendary firm Jaques of London and
is considered by collectors to be one of the finest Chess sets ever produced.
When designing the Chessmen, the craftsmen of Jaques of London attempted
to create a Chess set that was both classical yet unique in its
appearance. What is most striking about the Chessmen is how unique each of the
individual pieces are from a typical Staunton Pattern Chess set. From its
elongated Rook ramparts to its spherical Bishop head to the tightly cropped
Queen crenels, each of the Chessmen are a true masterpiece. These Chessmen are a
fitting tribute to the life and Chess of Bobby Fischer.
The most striking aspect of the Fischer Series Chess Set is the
beautiful patina on the Boxwood (White) Chessmen. Our artisans have accurately
captured the slightly aged appearance of the actual Chessmen used at the 1972
World Chess Championship. Simply put, these Chessmen look like they could very
well be used at the 1972 World Chess Championship.
As with all of our Chessmen, the Fischer Series Luxury Chess Set
exemplifies a perfect combination of distinct beauty and functionality. It has
been designed to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining an
elegance which has become the hallmark of a House of Staunton chess
set. The design, quality and craftsmanship of this set is UNMATCHED by any set
of Chessmen in its price range. Nothing even comes close!
The Chessmen are new and each set consists of 34 Chessmen, including four
Queens, a standard that was introduced by The
House of Staunton over 10 years ago. | Material Used | King Height | King Base Diameter | Total Set Weight* | Total Number of Pieces | Recommended Board Size | Wood Hand Carved | 4.4" 11.19 cm | 2.0" 5.08 cm | 78

| In 1972, Robert James "Bobby" Fischer and Boris Spassky battled for the World Chess Championship in the most widely followed match in the history of Chess. It was a disastrous start for Fischer, who lost the first 2 games in strange fashion. The first game was lost by an uncharacteristic blunder in a clearly drawn endgame. The second game was lost by forfeit, when Fischer refused to play the game in a dispute over the playing conditions. When the tournament organizers refused to give into his demands and the match appeared destined for a forfeit victory for the reigning Champion, Spassky yielded since it would have been a hollow victory. The third game was moved to a back room, away from the cameras whose presence had upset Fischer during the first game. The match continued and Bobby Fischer fought his way back and decisively defeated Spassky by a final score of 12.5 - 8.5, having won 7 and losing only 1 of the remaining games. Fischer's win was a momentous victory for the United States during the time of the Cold War. The iconoclastic American almost single-handedly defeating the mighty Soviet chess establishment that had dominated world chess for the past quarter-century. The Chessmen that were used during the match were produced by the legendary firm Jaques of London. The
House of Staunton is proud to offer this Chess set as a tribute
to arguably the finest Chess player
to have ever played the game of
Chess, Robert James
"Bobby" Fischer. In
light of his recent passing, we
felt the best way to honor his
accomplishments was to create an
Heirloom-quality reproduction of
the Chessmen used at his crowning achievement
- The 1972 World Championship. |
